What bears greater joys and sorrows, hope and despair , wonderful friendships with people around the world, bonds to beings one has never met and yet relies on, thought and wonder, endeavour and perseverance , learning by doing, creating new forms of social change through new media and testing new methods, attempting collective wisdom, tears and laughter - and every single day lived to the fullest?

Is there anywhere else, where one can learn so much every day, come upon love, friendship, empathy, generosity, anger , pity, jealousy, meanness, betrayal and all that there is to life? Is there another life that is filled with more “life to the rim” as we are experiencing?!

There may be things that I am missing out on at this moment, but it certainly is not life! And that it is so, is because of the rising of our people, our children, our mothers, our women and men and each and every one of you who go through this life with me.

Thank you for this life you have granted me and a happy Spring , a great new beginning for Iran as well as the region and the world , in this our year of “Awakening until Freedom”.

Even now, for me it is not about hate, but our common call for Democracy and Freedom!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 162px; height: 162px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_iWH16qoFDZo/TUwXUEEZaMI/AAAAAAAAAFk/6QZ0qJSJHug/s320/freedom.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5569852472607467714" />

Why do dictatorships use violence? The answer may seem simple: to keep their power ! And yet there is also another side to it. They use violence also to make us hate - and out of hatred behave in similar ways towards one another even , only so that they can call: see you are the same, were you in power all would be the same.

And it is up to us , through our actions and reactions to prove that : no we are not, and that no it would not be the same.

And it is thus that after all these months, the killings of our children, the hostage-taking of our activists, journalists, students, workers and specialists as well as torture and horrific executions , I still do not feel hatred! For hope is a duty - and not hating is a tool of battle on the road to democracy.

And I practice this not only towards the representatives of the tyranny we are battling , but also towards my fellow Greens and all other Iranians and honorary Iranians - who belong to our rainbow of possibilities - striving for Free Elections and Freedom in Iran.

I do not like all of you, endeavour to be friends with every single one of you, pretend to be liked by each and everyone one you, or even have the illusion that I can work with you all. There are some in this movement, whom I have come to value without measure; so that often I think of them and say that I can not imagine my life since June 12th , 2009 - without them. There are some with whom I work well. And there are those whom I do not like or can not work with. Yet I hate no one and I shall not belittle any one of my fellow travellers on this road to Freedom, for it is on the potential, strengths and actions of each and every single one of you that my future rides.

On this road to Freedom, we are not only all together, but we are dependent on one another’s ways and means. And I respect that!

Shiva Nojo

Marco and Shiva in Dialogue on Iran and the Iranian people's potential!

And we gladly share some of these letters with you, in the hope of encourgaing thought and debate...also among yourselves (If you are going to read only a part; please scroll down and read the last letter by dear Marco! )

Jan 15th, 2011

Shiva jan,

…I really would like to talk with you and others someway, tell me how. I think I'm not doing what I could do for the prisoners, and I keep claiming that we should work in different groups to support each group a single "category" of prisoners. Women, students, journalists, artists, human rights activists, lawyers... I wrote "women" not because I want to be a male-chauvinist, but because I really think that the female-participation in this movement, and the fact that so many women are paying a heavy and awful price for this, should be much more emphasized. The idea that in Iran there is not just Sakineh, but many brave women in jail, should arrive to the international media. Surely we cannot think to start anything all together, and I think it would be a great proof of maturity and responsibility to accept this. Each one of us, each group could accept that "variety" as a chance to do much more things in various fields, instead of fighting each other and wasting time to impose one opinion. Whoever can agree together on a project, should start it. Who disagree will do something else. All together, in different ways, we could achieve some goals. Of course I don't mean that we have to avoid discussions and not to try to bring people together... but we must act, because our brothers and sisters are in jail since 18 months.

A big hug Shiva jan,
M.

Jan 16th, 2011

Marco jan,

Yes, there is much we can do, but we are limited by our failures and rivalries.

Further to your mail about activists and Iran; I now share with you a mail I sent to one of our groups was - made up of women and student activists - some days ago.

A big Hug,
S.

I wonder…

About 18 months ago, I joined a group called “Where is my vote“.
Its intention was clear; to defend the vote I took much pain over casting and with it to defend the idea of elections in Iran - be they ever so flawed - and to use the arisen division in the regime to promote the idea of free elections as well as all the other basic demands that this brings with it!

Over the course of the last 18 months, this group has been forced into almost silence, partly due to the repression and arrests within but also by the same measure via the atmosphere created by members who seemed to prefer silence to any thoughts to which they did not agree with themselves.

And yet , are we all happier this way? Do we prefer silence? Do we look back and wonder what our part in all this division has been?

On a day such as today, when two political hostages were killed also as the result of the fact that we raised our voice demanding our rights, this group should have been a place of solace and support, and yet even more than before… it has come almost not to be.

I wonder about my own part in all this. I am not proud of myself for having been part of a group of such original calibre which did not blossom.

I truly wonder about my own part in all this?

Shiva

Jan 17th, 2011

Shiva jan,
Thanks for showing me this letter.

Yesterday I was walking with Cris in the Capitol Square in Rome, and when we passed near the big photo of Sakineh hanging from the balcony of the city hall, we both told each other how much annoyance we feel looking at that picture. It's not Sakineh in person who is the problem (she really needs to be helped), but what her case means and what it evokes in the world: the image of an old Iran, where women are illiterate, without a public role in society, subdued. And we both told each other: "This is the image of Iran that is useful for enemies of democracy and freedom in Iran. An image that could even help to justify, in the future, a war against this "barbaric" and "primitive" country where women are stoned."

Well, I think that we don't help Iran to walk to freedom and democracy if we don't tell everybody what kind of Iranian women we know (Nasrin, Shiva, Bahareh, Mahdieh, Atefeh, Hengameh, Jila, Mahsa...), women whom each western girl or woman could feel close and similar, whereas Sakineh is so far and different. We need to stress this side of the matter, if we want to find more friends for the Green cause and explain the world that Iran is not a country to "civilize", perhaps with bombs and democracy, but a country with a strong tradition of culture, a country where many women study, work, have a social role not just as "wives of" or "mother of" or "sister of" or "daughter of". This is a big difference from many other countries of Middle East: the female presence in the grass root, in the cultural élite of the country. This is something that, if known, could have a strong impact on the international audience. We should show that Iranian women are the biggest hope of a new Iran, something to admire and to bet on with good chances to win.

The Sakineh case pushed us back. We were "forced" to fight for her hoping that it was some way a chance to talk about Human Rights in Iran, but actually it damaged the movement and distracted the attention from the real issue: we cannot save Sakineh if we don't understand that Nasrin, Shiva, Bahareh and the others will save all the Iranian Sakinehs. The answer is in Iran and we must "free" that answer and show the world how much strong is that answer, that is how much brave, emancipated, cultured are the "Sakineh's sisters". When people talk with Cris and they know that she lives with two Iranian girls, their question are: "They are veiled? Do they eat pork ? And do they drink ? And why Iranian girls can go abroad to study?" This is what many people thinks of Iranian women. I think we need something more than a One Million Signatures Campaign, we need to show the world that many Iranian women are fighting not just for gender equality in a backward country, but for freedom of their husbands, sons and brothers, and for the democracy of all the country.

This could be an amazing innovation: women who are paying a price not only fighting for themselves as women, but for themselves as citizens. And in this way we should turn the solidarity for Sakineh into solidarity with Nasrin, Shiva etc.

I think a big new campaign should be done in this direction, with the help of the ONS Campaign, of Nobel Women, of activists. I think the 8 March it's a date we should not to waste.

And, of course, we have the journalists, the students, the lawyers, the activists to take care of.

A big big hug,

M.

: http://www.greencorrespondents.com/2010/06/blog-

<img style="float: left; The statement on top of our heads read: “Propaganda against the government.” We were then assembled into queues, and again there was an interminable wait.

They had made quite a few of the others wait outside in the cold. In the midst of all this, one of the ladies cursed loudly, which made the terrifyingly huge guard with a wireless in his hands bellow in his thick voice, “Whoever that was, step outside and show yourself, you piece of dirt.” Given his appearance and the fact that we were the detainees, a pin drop silence ensued. They yelled at us again, “Get out, all of you!” and we once again waited outside in the cold.

In the midst of all this, when the voice of the same guard rose once more, a lady went to him and said, “It would have been better if you had been just a little more polite, don’t you think?” The guard retorted, “You people curse at us all the time, is it our fault? We are mere guards, prison guards — it was not us who ordered your arrest.” The women responded, “Well now, it is you who have the authority to maneuver the situation here. It is not nice to add those harsh words on top of it.” Her statement gave everyone a kick-off to pour in their complaints.

After much hue and cry, we were taken to a hall named Section 203 of Evin. After filling out another set of forms and a full-body search, every six or seven people were taken to a 2×4 meter room with clean, light green walls equipped with a toilet seat, a shower, and a sink, all of them uncovered. This meant we all had to use the toilet in an open manner. We were provided with food and blankets, and our request for medicine was handled by the personnel of the relevant section — all of them being record holder prisoners who spent their detention period by working there, whose attitudes were slightly better. There was a camera in the room, and we could be heard as well.

The section was dedicated to all the girls arrested on Ashura, who after 14 days of their arrest had not been granted the right to call their families. The moment we arrived, we saw a girl with beautiful curls and a tiny physique enter with tears running down her cheeks, while all of her fellow detainees, whom we could only hear, announced her arrival. Apparently, she was removed from the solitary for interrogation in the middle of the previous night. They had taken her to a cement room in complete darkness in order to make her confess and accept responsibility for the publishing the messages and the crowd on Ashura. She was afraid of physical abuse and torture, but didn’t go any further than mental suppression. You should have seen the anxious look on her face. Her face is still right before my eyes.

In the other corner of the hall, a brave lady who had hit a guard on Ashura and got two months of solitary detention for that stayed in her room. Coincidently, the surname of one of the attendees of this section was Mir Hossein, and this lady, when neglected of her demands, would yell, “There is no hot water, no shampoo, you don’t even listen to us; now, have it your way.” She would then scream at the top of her voice, “Mir Hossein!” and everyone in response would yell, “Ya Hussein!”(editor’s note: “Ya Hossein, Mir Hossein” is a chant used by opposition members in antigovernment protests) and vice-versa.

She was a blessing for us, as it was enough for us to convey our demand to her and she would yell with her strong masculine voice and ask for it or easily create a state of chaos in the whole section. Her kindness was like that of a child, and her voice a strength in it that would give us hope. The first night seemed interminable.

The next day we started a new game. We would talk so loudly that those in other cells could hear us. We practiced a positive perception and decided to review the picture of our freedom. We avoided harsh language and negative thoughts so our dreams could come true.

The kindness of all toward the others was unique. We were innovative; and the unity in our slogans and anthems that would echo in the entire section was priceless. The sounds of torture would resonate in the cells at night, but we would not be fooled by it; we would give each other hope by singing to each other.

We had accepted to prefer death to an air filled with such suppression. When there was no space for minorities out there, why would we want such freedom? The mere presence of our countrywomen beside us, who had the simplest of all requests; freedom, would suffice us. We stayed next to each other at all times, which was the only thing that made us happy there.

The things I learned during this short time were more valuable to me than a university degree, and I could never forget a single moment of those times. We all got stronger; we could now firmly step forward. We prayed each night that God might uproot ignorance from our land, as it is the only cause of these misfortunes. It reminds me of what Islamic thinker Ali Shariati had said: that illiteracy is not when one cannot read or write, rather it is when one does not want to learn.

What we should keep in mind is that we could be the cause of developments instead of being the victims of change. We realized that we are countless; that our definite right is to be free; that we didn’t work hard enough. We realized that we were condemned for being Green.

Such intellect, strong morale, and abundant knowledge can further uplift us; we deserve a better atmosphere. We realize this, and it is not fair to us being the prisoners of the unwise.

The original of this text appeared at: http://jomhoriyat.wordpress.com

Your Messages of Solidarity for Bahman, Shiva & Jila!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 259px; height: 186px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_iWH16qoFDZo/S1YB0TU06xI/AAAAAAAAAEU/n2HRrjvOiGU/s320/etehad.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5428528398894164754" />

Dear fellow travellers on this Green Road to Freedom,

Over the last months, you have been a source of strength to one another and to me. Haven’t you been here before?´

I indicated that I knew what was going on and had been here before and then told her that she is brave for wearing green. She laughed and ran on. Only a few seconds later, I saw her going towards the security forces and reporting to them. Before I knew what was going on , two vans with 4 so- called sisters in each and a person constantly taking photos surrounded me. Another man came towards me and kept asking over and over again if I knew that the mothers had gathered here. I objected to this massive pressure and told them to ask me in peace and quiet and I would answer them, when they suddenly said, ´we have a number or so questions , please step into the van´ and then the whole bunch of them started pushing me towards the van .

In the van´, some of the woman kept shouting and asking why we were arrested and they responded: ´ we are only officials and must follow orders`. They told us that they had a number of questions which we must answer in the office. We asked which office and they responded the park’s office! But they put their foot on the gas pedal and drove towards Vozara detention (which is used as a first questioning instance). One of us started to send an SMS with the word Vozara to her family, when - with the help of some gadgets - they realized that they had that a mobile was being used and shouted ´all mobiles off´ and then all lines were turned off!

From there they took the 33 of us , each separately arrested , to Vozara, where we were questioned for hours until we were totally exhausted. There was no order in these questioning. Every minute someone gave another order. One said ´write this here` , another said ´all stand in line over there`, a third yelled ´ first a body search then all the writing and so on`! All in all , they were a most confused bunch. They took our personal possessions and then led us into a room to be photographed. They gave us a board each bearing our name and the words ´gathering against the regime in Laleh Park`!

After this they made us wait in a long corridor where it was extremely cold. Here there were about 15 rooms of 1 x 1.30 meter, and in each 5 of us had to fit, and in the rest of the rooms other persons had already taken place.

One of those already there , had been lying on the floor ill for four days, with no one taking notice of her. When we saw what shape she was in and yelled for help, they came and took her out where she immediately vomited . One of the wardens started yelling ´one of you come clean this mess up`. So one of us went and cleaned everything most efficiently so that the wardens started to feel shameful. When we saw this look on their faces, we started to take our chance and asked for tea for someone who had a migraine, and medication for others, as well as the right to make telephone calls and so on until they started begging us to understand that they were not responsible and that they were only looking for ´ whoever is the leader of all these provocations` ; and they added ´we know you are all innocent and your time is being wasted, but we have to follow through on these orders`!

Yet through all this time, our slogans and noise did not let them any peace.

When the next day, around 14.00 hours, we started to hear the shouts and screams of the people outside, our own shouts got even louder. Here they asked for help and took us onto a bus to be driven towards the revolutionary court. But the people followed us in their cars and motorbikes so that they had to ask for help to open the way for the bus. Still the people raised hell outside and we were warmed by their presence. They would not give up and were with us all the way.

There was only one judge in the court and to tell the truth he was the best of the lot. After some time, they loaded us again on the bus and lied that we would all be set free. Yet after much had passed , they read a few names and asked these to step down, noting that the rest of us would be ´off to Evin`!

I can not say what state we were in. We were cold and hungry, since we had gone on a hunger strike from the time of our arrest. Still those who were named and separated , had for some time insisted that they would not leave until all were freed.

The bus took us to Evin and Evin is a story onto itself, which I shall tell later and in detail. Yet all in all Evin was full of students and those with a conscience . Those who had committed real crimes came and went, but Evin was full of many taken prisoner on December 27th. The songs we heard , told the story of hope and high spirits. One felt as if the whole of Tehran was in Evin. The wardens and staff were tired and at a loss, and also they were not treating us bad. There was a suspect warmth in the air that suggested of appeasement!

Everyone carried their part excellently. We were in high spirits and very ready witted in our responses. We were and acted as free human beings. FREE . Each acted to the best of their abilities and awareness. In this way, we were most creative in our reactions and slogans. I know it will bring a smile to your lips when I retell them. And I will. In the next letter.”

To be continued…

A New Begin

Seven months ago, on June 12th 2009, I made a present of my language to the Green Movement in Iran and have since written very little in English.

January 13th 2010 , which is exactly seven months since the day the election coup and fraudulent vote count shocked us into a collective certainty that we have no choice but to fight back with people power, seems a fitting day to re-start to write in English, and to tell some of the stories of this ongoing movement, in an attempt to connect the personal with the social.

It is in some ways the “13 out” of this other new year, for in Iran we like to spend the 13th day of the new year - beginning in spring - picnicking outdoors and in parks or upon green fields, to make sure that the year starts well and will be fruitful.

It is also fitting that my first entry into this new weblog - after this introduction- will be a translation of a letter by one of the 33 of the Mourning Mothers who were attacked and taken prisoner on Saturday January 9th of this new year. For these lines come not from an activist who happens also to be a mother, but from a mother who has become active in sympathy with other mothers who have lost their children , in an attempt to secure a better future for her child , but also in memory of a past which was once very hopeful and yet saw this hope turning into dust. The dust that made itself especially felt when one of her close friends was executed in the 1980s. The dust that went on to cover her whole life until the energy of the presidential election campaign brought back memories of all she had hoped would be; all she had hoped to be.

And finally , it is fitting that this begin will be via the words of a less known woman, which dear Noushin has often been reminding us to pay attention to.

So let us take to the green, and begin a new begin with the letter which will be the next post to follow.

Shiva
